Within the GrowBot initiative, the consortium wishes to foster new and creative research thinking, primarily for young researchers who are motivated to work in scientific fields. Therefore two calls for ideas in the form of prizes will be launched for performing selected activities at the European level. Topic of the 1st Call of Ideas is „In situ growth dynamics of vines and lianas in the forest canopy“. >>more information

HSB Research Fellow in Biomimetics

The Biomimetics-Innovation-Centre (B-I-C) at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences invites applications for the following position

  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow
  • Salary Scale TV-L 13, full-time
  • The position is a fixed term position (2 years)

The Bremen University of Applied Sciences (HSB) is characterized by the poles of tradition and innovation. Although its roots extend back more than two hundred years, our range of faculties is modern and uniquely oriented toward the future. The HSB is member of UAS7, a strategic alliance of seven leading German Universities of Applied Sciences committed to excellence in teaching and research. Since its foundation in 2005, the Biomimetics-Innovation-Centre (B-I-C) at the HSB has been coordinating research activities in the fields of fundamental interdisciplinary research and development.

Project Description
Currently the B-I-C is looking for an outstanding young postdoctoral research fellow to conduct an interdisciplinary research project at the interface of biology, biomechanics and materials sciences. Research within the project will focus on the biomechanical analysis of arthropod exoskeletons and the development and construction of bio-inspired space probes. The research fellow will work closely together with Prof. Dr. Dirks (Biological Structures and Biomimetics), Prof. Dr. Labisch (Biomechanics and Construction), and Prof. Dr. Müssig (Biological Materials/Material Sciences).

Requirements

  • PhD (or be close to completion) in either organismal biology, biomechanics or materials sciences
  • profound interdisciplinary experience in morphological experimental techniques
  • experience in state-of-the-art imaging techniques helpful
  • experience in simulation (CAD, FEM and n-body) or material analysis helpful

The willingness to gain additional experience in these fields would be an advantage.

The B-I-C is closely collaborating with the international B.Sc. program “Biomimetics” at the Hochschule Bremen. The project will thus also allow the research fellow to gain valuable interdisciplinary teaching experience with a group of highly motivated students.

The Bremen University of Applied Sciences is committed to a policy of providing equal employment opportunities for both men and women alike, and therefore strongly encourages women to apply for the positions offered. In case of equal qualifications and aptitude, applicants with disabilities will be considered preferentially. The Bremen University of Applied Sciences explicitly invites individuals with migration backgrounds to apply.
